چکیده

When Nez Perce speakers were presented with a cartoon depicting the interactions between Sue, the classmate, and the teacher, they judged both (1) and (2) to be appropriate utterances by the classmate. In (1), a 3rd person pronoun in the embedded clause co-refers with the matrix subject, Sue. In (2), a 1st person pronoun replaces it, with the same reference. In English, this second pattern is a good sign of the presence of a clausal quotation. Over the last decade, it has been shown quite convincingly that not all languages are like English in this respect. Let us call an embedded indexical which refers to an argument of the matrix clause but not to a participant of the overall utterance by the relatively neutral term of “quotation-like indexical”, or QLI. Ejectives in Nez Perce

This paper discusses ejectives in Nez Perce, a Penutian language spoken in western Idaho, northeastern Oregon and eastern Washington. However, there is no consensus on how to determine which features are contrastive. The ...

Ergative case and the transitive subject: a view from Nez Perce

Ergative case, the special case of transitive subjects, raises questions not only for the theory of case but also for theories of subjecthood and transitivity. This paper analyzes the case system of Nez Perce, a ”three-way ergative” language, with an eye towards a formalization of the category of transitive subject. I show that it is object agreement that is determinative of transitivity, and h...
